Virtual Truth, 2002
canvas, wood, paper, adhesive, sandpaper, string, mirror card
150cm x 150cm x 6cm
'Virtual Truth' is a wall base installation that was made as part of the Life Size exhibition presented at the PM gallery London W5, which was a joint project co coordinated by the Print Makers Council UK and the host gallery (PM Gallery London).
The main image i.e., the central canvas started life as a tiny image on the web - it was a small jpeg, from a hard ware store website. Its a display image of a tiny self-assembly garden shed. To me it had the quality of an actual house or home to it..
It might be a place where one might go seeking solitude, safety or indeed solace. As to its contents well that is a list that's as long as the piece of thread around the edge of my imagination. Perhaps it could also be a place where secrets /possessions might be kept. It began to take on a quality of mystery with a slight tinge of foreboding. I have made it so that the window area of the hut on the right looks as if you could reach in to it - an optical illusion. This is more obvious when one sees the canvas in the gallery setting. Whatever, it is only virtual - the future can only become what you or I make of it.
There are, in total, 21 boxes, each holds a provision, a dream or a possibility for the future.
